Over the past few years, those who have been using iTunes to pay for Netflix may soon have to brace for a probable increase in their rates. Netflix has confirmed that it has begun discontinuing subscribers’ ability to utilize their iTunes billing option for the streaming service. Subscribers on the basic plan who used iTunes for payment purposes will now need to directly pay Netflix by using a credit or debit card, according to Netflix representative Momo Zhao.
In 2018, Netflix stopped allowing new subscribers to register for in-app subscriptions on Apple devices to bypass Apple’s commission. However, it enabled those already using Apple for payment to maintain their preferred payment method. At least one user mentioned that they continued to enjoy the service’s $10 monthly rate until they were removed from their special pricing.
Netflix discontinued its $10 basic plan in both the US and the UK last year, which formerly served as the most affordable ad-free option available. Following a price hike a few months later, new subscribers have had to pay a minimum of $15.49 to enjoy a viewing experience unmarred by advertisements. The ad-supported option now costs $7 per month, while the Premium package that includes support for four devices and Ultra HD is now priced at $23 per month. Subscribers who formerly paid via iTunes will now have to shoulder these costs if they wish to keep their subscriptions.
